The Planets

Objective: Visually respond to Gustav Holst's The Planets by designing a tabloid-size poster for a concert performance of the orchestral work.

The drama of The Planets was the primary driving force behind the poster. Using collage, the design is reactionary to the music, specifically the Mars portion of the work. The push and pull of the boisterous tubas and soft stringed instruments are represented by the heavy use of Futura and Hoefler, while fonts like Caslon, Base Mono, and Cholla Slab reference the variety of instruments used. The loudest instruments demand the listener's attention, but the subtleties give The Planets its richness.
